Dacres sources rubber and discarded tires on “Tire Tuesdays” to create sculpture and three-dimensional objects that explore experiences unique to Black people, women and the queer community. Her sculptures portray important figures in her life, be they famous writers, mentors, friends or family members. For Dacres, the worn-down material is reflective of the “wear and tear that is unique to Black people and women.” Dacres uses tires from different vehicles, their unique patterns and treads adding texture and character to her figures. The artist manipulates the material to create braids, dreads and Bantu knots, adding gears, chains and other hardware to highlight personalized motifs. Dacres is of Jamaican descent and lives and works in New York.
